Sunroof over the road
In Germany, the highway is covered with a solar roof.
Why do we think that’s a good idea? Because it is a huge source of additional natural energy that will further conserve resources.
Now let’s talk about technology itself. Researchers at the German Solar Energy Institute are here. Fraunhofer and the Austrian Institute of Technology have developed a photovoltaic system for installation above roads. This joint project is a study between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It will be based on a 5.5 m high steel structure. It is expected that the construction of the experimental facility will start next autumn.
Through a research project we want to unleash the potential of motorways for renewable energy production, explains Steffen Bilger, Secretary of State at the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Constant rapid traffic on the road makes the installation of overhangs above it a difficult technical task. But the idea of using an already closed site for generating the energy needed by electric vehicles should be realized».
But there is also the nuance that such systems will cost quite a bit because they also have to be very strong to withstand the impact of a car going off the road. In addition, sheds with a length of fewer than 80 metres are classified as tunnels and therefore will be subject to particularly stringent safety requirements.
An additional source of energy, especially on the road, will make it possible to install more frequent charging stations. And that makes the idea of using electric transport even more attractive.
